Just wanted to let you all know that today we canceled our long-time subscription to the Cape Cod Times - due to their inability to cover the local news and their inability to report fairly on this upcoming Special and Crucial election.

I would request that you let everyone on your extensive email lists know that not one word was printed about yesterday's Coakley rally in Hyannis in today's (MLK Day of Service) edition of the Cape Cod Times; and to urge each and every person to cancel their subscriptions as well. Writing letters to editor and/or ombudsman wouldn't hurt either - although I doubt they will print any of them, just as they chose to omit the letters in yesterday's and today's edition that most likely were in opposition to their endorsement of Mr. Brown. The word I used this morning after searching for the article and pictures of yesterday's Coakley rally was "despicable"! No other word describes their editor's intentional actions.

Thank you for spreading the word...and here's to Martha Coakley - may she win across the state, despite others' negative wishes!

HARWICH - The Harwich community will celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with festivities planned by the Harwich No Place for Hate Committee in collaboration with Barnstable County AmeriCorps Cape Cod, which will sponsor a food drive at supermarkets throughout Barnstable County.

The tribute will begin with a celebration in the main foyer of Harwich Town Hall at 11a.m., with a flag ceremony and color guard, music and readings from the works of Dr. King.

Following this hour-long ceremony, those who wish to offer some time of service are invited to Shaws Supermarket on Sisson Road or to Stop and Shop in East Harwich between noon and 4 p.m. to assist the Barnstable County AmeriCorps with the “Hunger For Change” food drive campaign. Volunteers will be needed to greet shoppers and to staff a table at each store, assisting customers to select healthier donated foods, said community organizer John Bangert, a member of Harwich No Place for Hate Committee.

To conclude the day, volunteers and members of the community will join together for a soup dinner at the Dennis Church of the Nazarene. The dinner will be cooked by a handful of volunteers and orchestrated by two volunteer chefs from the Ring Brothers Marketplace in South Dennis.

The community dinner will be held from 4 to 6 p.m.
Barnstable County AmeriCoprs Cape Cod is hosting its 10th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service by bringing members of the community together to address the pressing issue of hunger on Cape Cod. This year’s project was designed to help re-stock the shelves of pantries struggling to serve clients, while also helping meet their goal of collecting healthier donated goods,” said Rebecca Wolfson, program specialist at AmeriCorps Cape Cod.

The group has partnered with the Cape Cod Hunger Network, the Barnstable County Department of Human Services and Harwich No Place for Hate, and a number of other organizations to plan the event.

Harwich High School Exit Poll Predicts Coakley, Brown as Winners

Based on an exit poll of 309 voters conducted by Harwich High School Government students at the Harwich Community Center between 9 AM and 1 PM, we predict that Martha Coakley and Scott Brown will win their respective primary elections. In the Democratic primary, Coakley obtained 47% support in the poll, Capuano 22%, Khazei 21%, and Pagliuca 9%. In the Republican primary, Brown received 93% and Robinson 7%.

The poll indicates some reasons for Coakley’s success. Most prominently, the poll show that Coakley supporters felt more strongly about their candidate than did those of other candidates, Capuano in particular. Among Coakley voters, 73% reported that they strongly favored their candidate (24% liked her with reservations, 3% did not feel strongly) compared to 43% for Capuano (47% liked, 10% did not feel strongly). This enthusiasm is an advantage in a low turnout election.

When asked about candidate qualities, experience was most often cited as important – by 33% of Democratic voters, and these voters nearly split between Coakley and Capuano, suggesting that his argument about his experience in Congress has some traction, but among those that reported that trust (22% of voters) and values (20%) were most important, Coakley held a large edge.

In responding to which issues were most important, voters most often cited health care (49 %), followed by the economy (39%), war (27%), and character (22%). The war was the least favorable issue for Coakley, possibly because of her lack of foreign policy experience. Still she received a plurality of those citing all of these issues.

In our survey, gender did not seem to be a large factor – women were only slightly more likely to support Coakley than men, and women did not show the traditional gender gap in being more supportive of democratic candidates. We also had many more women represented in our survey. This may be due to the non-competitive Republican race that motivated more Democratic leaners, and possibly more women, to vote.

By age, older voters (60+) represented nearly 60% of our survey. This may be due to more consistent voting habits by older voters especially in a low turnout special primary, and our polling during work hours. Coakley was most preferred by older Democratic voters (44%) though she was even stronger among middle aged (40-59) voters, with 54% support.

Khazei did unexpectedly well in our poll, with 21% and nearly tied with Capuano for second. This may have been to the enthusiasm of his supporters (67% strongly supported), and his popularity among registered Democrats (24%) and among those who cited character as an important issue (24%).

Of course, a small poll like this taken at only one polling place cannot be expected to accurately predict the outcome of a statewide race. But our poll shows some clear trends that may carry across the state. It also indicates some reasons behind voters’ decisions that can help illuminate the final results. Most importantly, it gave our students a chance to see democracy in action and to interview voters and see what made them choose different candidates. We are grateful to Town Clerk Anita Doucette and the Harwich community for supporting this ongoing program.

A Message from Martha Coakley

The polls have closed, the voters have spoken, and I am so delighted to tell you that tonight, with great honor and humility, I will accept the Democratic Party nomination to the United States Senate.
I am so grateful for your support in this campaign. With focus, grit, hard work, optimism, enthusiasm, commitment, and a sense of humor, you made tonight possible.

Last week at a 1208 Countdown stop in South Hadley, I spoke with a young man in a wheelchair. He asked me why many buildings in Massachusetts didn’t have full access for those with disabilities. My response was, frankly, we haven’t done as well as we should. I told him that it was just one of the reasons I admired Senator Ted Kennedy: because he worked tirelessly to make life as fair as possible for everyone. That young man gave me a mug with some text from Lewis Carroll’s "Through the Looking Glass":

"There is no use trying," said Alice, "one can't believe impossible things."
"I dare say you haven’t had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

From the bottom of my heart, I want to offer a sincere thank you to you, your families, and all those across this great Commonwealth, from the Berkshires to Boston, from Peabody to Provincetown, who worked so hard for these past months to make this victory possible!

You helped me convince the voters to send a different kind of leader to Washington, one who can see all the possibilities and who will get to work on those problems that have seemed impossible to change.
I also want to thank each of my fellow candidates – Mike, Steve and Alan – for running a vigorous, civil, and positive campaign. I look forward to working with all of them not just towards victory on January 19th - but after that to working together to show this Commonwealth that the solutions we seek are within reach.

I entered this race because I believe that Massachusetts needs a Senator who will work to restore a healthy economy, to reform our health care system, to protect our environment and seek energy solutions, to make our communities and our nation safer, and to protect and defend our civil rights. If we roll up our sleeves and work together, all of these are quite simply, possible.

Martha Coakley's campaign started out by a handful of supporters gathering signatures for her nomination papers in the front of Harwich's Stop & Shop Supermarket.

I'm supporting Martha Coakley for the U.S. Senate because she cares about things that are important to me.

As attorney general, Martha has recovered money from Wall Street for taxpayers and consumers and worked to restrict major subprime lenders from foreclosing on unfair loans. In Washington, she'll fight for stricter oversight of the financial industry to prevent another economic collapse.

President Obama recently recognized Martha at the White House for her work against consumer fraud. She has worked to protect seniors from predatory lending and telephone fraud scams and brought enforcement actions against drug companies that artificially drive up costs. In Washington, she'll fight for stronger consumer protections, like the new Federal Consumer Protection Agency.

Martha has been an advocate for children and families for over 25 years. She has protected our children's health by reaching a landmark settlement with manufacturers of toys containing dangerous amounts of lead, securing funds to be used to prevent future cases of lead poisoning. In Washington, Martha will work to help law enforcement effectively protect children and to hold manufacturers of dangerous products accountable.

I'll be voting for Martha Dec. 8, hoping to make history by electing the best candidate and Massachusetts' first woman senator!

I have watched and admired the career of Martha Coakley for over 20 years and was delighted when she was the first to throw her hat into the ring.

As our attorney general she has taken on large corporations like the utilities, Wall Street firms, and health care insurers and providers. She has won millions of dollars for the taxpayers of Massachusetts by prosecuting companies involved with abusive nursing homes, predatory lending scams and health insurance fraud. She saved customers $100 million in unfair rate increases from utility companies and has recovered $135 million from Wall Street finance firms. All these issues are of concern to Cape Cod families and elders.

Coakley has always had the courage to take action and make business, and even our own government, "play by the rules." She can be relied upon to defend the underdog and to speak for the people.

I believe her long record shows she is the candidate who can carry on the social justice mission of the most effective senator in the history of the U.S. — our own Ted Kennedy. I urge voters to honor Kennedy's legacy by choosing her in the primary election on Dec. 8.

Martha Coakley is a strong principled leader, and not a weather-vane politician. She makes decisions without testing the political climate as to how her stand may be perceived.

Regarding the health care reform act, Coakley refused to take "... two steps backwards on the 'poison pill'..." of the Stupak amendment, clearly demonstrating her commitment to women's constitutional right to choose.

Concerning war and peace, although Congressman Capuano grandstands his positions concerning Iraq and Afghanistan, I've never heard him at anti-war rallies. With 11 years in Congress, Mr. Capuano is complicit in funding both these inane wars. Coakley supports President Obama's plan to fully withdraw from Iraq by the end of 2011. As a senator, she will focus squarely on the mission of keeping America and our soldiers safe from harm.

In a local case of consumer racial profiling, law enforcement failed to intervene on behalf of the victim. It was the Attorney General's office that acted upon and precipitated a follow-up by the U.S. Department of Justice to conduct cultural awareness training with the Mashpee police.

I believe Martha Coakley is a candidate who will champion and protect the constitutional rights of all people, regardless of race, color, gender or income, and this carries on the Kennedy legacy.

Education policies alone put Coakley at the top

Massachusetts is about to make a critical decision. Our representatives in the U.S. Senate are our most powerful advocates in Washington. We have been fortunate in the quality and clout of our senators, and we need to get engaged in the current campaign.

While all the candidates have their strengths and experiences, Martha Coakley stands out to me as the person who can be a great senator. Her education policies are thoughtful and will support our schools' needed improvements. No one anywhere has done more to protect children and promote the welfare of families than she has in her work as attorney general. I am convinced she has the values, intelligence and judgment to be the advocate we need in Washington.

As a high school government teacher at Harwich High School for 13 years, I have used many exercises — exit polls, voter surveys, etc. — to engage my students. Our activist group works tirelessly to raise money and awareness of human rights issues around the world. Our students learn to follow politics and to get involved.

We, as a state, need to be involved right now. It has been 27 years since we chose a new senator. This is a critical election; I hope everyone turns out and votes!

Attorney General Martha Coakley, the state’s top lawyer, acknowledged yesterday that she improperly filled out a federal financial disclosure she submitted to the US Senate as part of her candidacy in the special election.

The Globe reported yesterday that Coakley was the only candidate, in disclosures due to the Senate by this week, to report that neither she nor her spouse had any reportable financial asset worth more than $1,000.
But her campaign said Coakley failed to list $200,000 to $250,000 in financial assets that are held by her husband, Thomas F. O’Connor Jr. The campaign said Coakley also failed to note a retirement account she holds that is worth $12,000.

“It was a mistake,’’ said Alex Zaroulis, a campaign spokeswoman. “Clearly we are working to amend the financial disclosure forms to include those accounts, and we’re going to do it as quickly as possible.’’
O’Connor’s assets are from his savings account and from an inheritance he was given when his father passed away several years ago, Zaroulis said. She said she could not detail how much was in each asset.
Zaroulis attributed the mistake to a discrepancy between what Coakley has had to report to the state as a candidate in Massachusetts and the more in-depth information required of federal candidates. It was nonetheless a somewhat embarrassing omission for a perceived front-runner who oversees the state’s legal affairs.

Although Coakley will now report $12,000 from a retirement account, Zaroulis said she still does not have other additional income to report aside from her husband’s assets, which are in his name alone.
Coakley and her husband own a home in Medford, but primary residences do not have to be disclosed on the US Senate forms.

It is not the first time Coakley has had her filings for political office scrutinized. The Massachusetts Republican Party recently challenged her use of her state campaign account to the Federal Election Commission; the party alleges she has relied on it for federal campaign activity, which would be impermissible.

Senate guidelines require candidates to report a banking account that had, in aggregate, more than $5,000, or generated more than $200 in interest during the reporting period, which in this case is the past 21 months. Coakley, in her initial five-page filing, indicated she did not have that much money.
Coakley listed only her salary, which for last year was $135,179. She also listed a $3,950 salary from the Boston University School of Law, for being an adjunct professor. Her husband was listed as earning a salary of more than $1,000 at Pinkerton Consulting & Investigations, in addition to earning a pension of more than $1,000 from the City of Cambridge.

Even with Coakley’s amended disclosure, her assets are still far less valuable than her opponents’, according to a review of each candidate’s filing.

Stephen Pagliuca, who made a fortune in private equity, listed assets worth $259 million to $765 million.

City Year cofounder Alan Khazei listed assets between $347,000 and $1.1 million.

State Senator Scott P. Brown, the leading Republican in the race, reported assets of $1.1 million to $2.7 million.

US Representative Michael E. Capuano filed financial disclosure forms as a member of the House that detailed his finances for 2008 and is not required to file a new form, according to Senate ethics rules. According to his 2008 filing, the value of his assets was $1.4 million to $3.1 million, and the amount of income from those assets was between $28,918 and $91,500. One of the biggest chunks of Capuano’s income came from rent on three properties, two in Somerville and one in Tuftonboro, N.H.

I ask you to support Martha Coakley in her run to follow in the foot steps of Jack & Teddy Kennedy. But now these foot steps should be filled by the shoes of Martha Coakley who would become the first women US Senator to represent Massachusetts. She has done us all good as Attorney General for Massachusetts as well as her great roll as District Attorney for Middlesex County.

Martha Coakley announces candidacy for Kennedy seat

BOSTON -- Attorney General Martha Coakley announced Thursday she will run as a Democratic candidate in the special election to succeed the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

The 20-year prosecutor said she can continue to be "an effective voice for the people of Massachusetts."

Kennedy died last week of brain cancer at age 77.

Coakley said at a news conference the state has had a "crisis of confidence" following Kennedy's death and she wants to pick up his mantle.

"We've depended on him here in the Commonwealth and in Washington, and we will miss his strength and leadership and his sense of humor. As some have noted, no one can fill his shoes, but we must strive to follow in his footsteps," she told supporters at a downtown Boston hotel.

Coakley sidestepped a question from reporters whether she favored changing state law to allow the governor to appoint an interim senator, as Kennedy had requested in a letter before his death. Legislators have planned a hearing on the matter for next week.

"For me, personally, I am fully focused on the race," she said, adding she trusted legislators "will make the right decision."

The 56-year-old Coakley becomes the most prominent candidate to officially declare. Several others are waiting for Kennedy's nephew, former Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II, to decide if he will run.

Coakley said in response to a question that she decided to commit to the race without waiting to see whether a Kennedy family member would run because the senator had declared, in his letter seeking an interim appointment, that the state needs strong and effective representation in Washington.

In a follow-up interview with The Associated Press, she said:

-- Growing up in the Vietnam era has made her wary of President Barack Obama getting dragged into a protracted military engagement in Afghanistan, but "I trust him for now."

-- She has focused on health care cost containment as attorney general, since Massachusetts has the nation's first universal health insurance law, and is in favor of it being included in any overhaul law the president signs. She also said a so-called "public option" for providing government-sponsored insurance should be considered.

-- She dismissed as "frivolous" a Massachusetts Republican Party complaint that she used $24,000 in state campaign money to pay Washington-based consultants as she considered a federal campaign. She said all her actions have been in compliance with state and federal ethics laws.

Coakley told her supporters she decided to run "because government should work well and it has to work for everyone," adding that the performance of government "has been in some ways disheartening and discouraging."

"I believe now is the time to move beyond the idea of, well, `It's good enough for government work,' and demand a new standard of excellence. And I know that I need to prove to voters across the commonwealth that I am the best candidate and that I would be the best new senator from Massachusetts," Coakley said.

Coakley described her humble roots in western Massachusetts and her career as a prosecutor, both as Middlesex District Attorney in a large district that includes populous suburbs of Boston, and since, 2007, as the state's attorney general.

"Now, with your help, I hope to bring my experience to Washington," she said.

She did not overtly highlight her status as the state's top female elected official. In the interview, she said, "I think that we've reached a time when women are in business, they're in politics, they're in government. They should be. We're still breaking barriers, but I think I've done it on the merits."

Other potential Democratic candidates include U.S. Reps. Michael Capuano and Stephen Lynch. Potential Republican candidates include former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey and state Sen. Scott Brown.

Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling is considering an independent campaign but told a radio station Thursday that the chances are "slim to none," though he will not rule it out.
